Matilda was born in Khartoum, in the former Sudan and she lived in both the northern and southern parts of Sudan. After completing medical school in Sudan, Matilda lived in Egypt as a refugee for a year before immigrating to the United States in 1999 due to the civil war in the country at that time. Matilda has been working in the healthcare industry in the United States for over 20 years. Matilda holds a Master’s of Public Health from the U.S. Currently, she is the Co-Chair of Refugee Review Board, a committee of the Society of Refugee Health Providers, created to center the lived experiences of being a refugee. Matilda is fluent in both Arabic and English and she also speaks Romanian.

Matilda enjoys travelling, cooking, and basketball. Matilda and her family live in Lanham, Maryland. 

Favorite Food

  • East African cuisine, mainly South Sudanese dishes which include kisra, aseeda, stewed okra, and mula komodo, a dish made with spinach, okra, peanut butter, and kombo salt
