Our Programs & Services

Society members are eligible to apply for terms on our committees – which are special interest groups dedicated to a subfield within refugee and immigrant health. These committees require substantial commitment on the part of their members and produce guidance, publications and more.

We also co-host the Health TTA Coordination Working Group, an interagency group bringing together multi-sectoral stakeholders to create a comprehensive, coordinated response to support Afghan newcomers.

Our refugee, asylee and migrant health subject matter experts provide health training and technical assistance within a range of topics for organizations across North America. We also respond to Society members’ queries and link them with relevant resources and individuals.

Additionally, we are currently partnering with Switchboard to provide health training and technical assistance to resettlement service providers.

With our membership rapidly growing, we host and facilitate an active member listserv. Society members can submit clinical questions, requests, surveys, job postings, updates, and anything else on their mind to their refugee and migrant health colleagues.

Members can apply annually for our mentorship program, which connects members with similar interests as mentors or mentees. Mentorships typically last for one year. Mentor/mentee pairs commit to one contact hour per month through in-person or virtual meetings. Often mentor/mentee pairs also meet in-person at our annual conference. The mentee drives the objectives for the mentorship year. 

Mentor/mentee pairs have gone on to collaborate on research projects, publications, and more!

The Society creates educational guides, blog posts, and publications centered on refugee and migrant health topics. This information is tailored to share evidence-based, best practices with healthcare and service providers.

We also partner with other groups to curate repositories of resources, such as partnering with the National Resource Center for Refugees, Immigrants & Migrants on collating translated health resources for Afghan communities.

Many of our current resources have been created through a partnership with Switchboard.

We offer scholarships for previously resettled refugees to attend our conference, the North American Refugee Health Conference. The applicant must be a previously resettled refugee who is currently working in the health field in any capacity or a refugee student studying or training in the health field in any capacity.

The scholarship is for the registration fee only. Travel, lodging, and food are not covered. It is not a cash award. If awarded, the Society will register the awardee for the conference and waive the fee.

The funds for the scholarships are obtained by interested individuals making a tax deductible donation to our scholarship fund. The number of scholarships awarded per year is entirely dependent upon how much money is donated.

Scholarships are awarded on a first come/first served basis and are awarded in the order of applications received. The Society does not wait to make the award on a specific date. Once the appropriate amount for a scholarship is collected, then the next applicant is notified of the award. Since many conference attendees do not register until a short time before the conference, awards may potentially be provided right up until the start of the conference. If an applicant’s plans have changed and they cannot attend, then the award will be given to the next applicant on the list.

Thanks to the generous support of Switchboard, we were able to award 350 scholarships for a free year-long Society membership to service providers working with refugee populations. And thanks to the Michelson Foundation, we were able to award over 60 free year-long Society memberships to women identifying as refugees, immigrants or migrants. Wow!

We do not currently have a scholarship opportunity available. However, if the membership fee is a barrier for you and you identify as a refugee, asylee, migrant or have personal/family experience of forced displacement, please email us at hello@refugeesociety.org. The Society values colleagues with lived experiences. We do not want cost to be a barrier to your meaningful participation with our organization.

Approximately once a quarter, the Society offers webinars with refugee and immigrant health experts, focused on a relevant clinical, public health or resettlement topic. We also host “Ask an Expert” series which provides an informal virtual setting for attendees to ask questions of experts around particular refugee health topics.
